As a child
Natasha had a passion for entertaining. Modeling was her
first love, but when challenges steered her down a different
road she met up with acting and fell in love with it. As
an actress she has had numerous movie and television
roles including her most recent projects "Third
Watch" and an ad campaign for GMC.
Natasha is now considered a filmmaker dabbling in producing
and writing. She has produced a short film, will produce
another this summer, and has also written numerous scripts
that she will begin shopping this summer. Natasha
M. Dixon is the Next Generation for the film industry. Natasha
says " When I got closer to Jesus that's when I began to
see myself through God's eyes and now I expect nothing but the
best for my life."
I recently caught up with busy Ms. Dixon for a brief chat
and here is what she had to share with me...enjoy!
Jay: When did you know you wanted to be an actor?
When they told me I was too short to model. Of course
the people telling me that knew nothing about commercial
modeling that takes all shapes and sizes, but that's what encouraged
me to take an acting class. I fell in love.
Jay: How did you get started in the biz?
My sister said I'm moving to LA to be an actress, and at
that time I was just referred to the master class by my
professor and I said me too. I moved to LA a
year later, but in that year I read every book I could get my
hands on and came down to visit a few times prior to my move
and landed an agent.
Jay: Who are your influences?
In acting Angela Bassett has influenced my work a great
deal. Now in Business Oprah Winfrey and Jennifer Lopez.
Jay: How much of yourself goes into the characters you
play?
100% of me goes into my work. 100% is preparation so
you can live as your character in the moment. Real
life is about being present and when you are acting you are
duplicating life. I found that the better prepared I
am the more present I am.
Jay: What is your proudest moment
professionally/personally?
My proudest moment...that's a hard one. Well I'll tell
you personal moment related to acting. I was showing
my son a tape of my work and he said in a surprised tone
"mommy your good". That meant a lot coming
from him it was double sided because one he's my son and two
he's a fellow thespian who knows good work when he sees it.
Jay: Television, film, stage or comedy which would
you choose?
Don't make me choose...okay first thought Dramatic Film.
That does not mean I will not accept offers from the
others.
Jay: What type of roles will you refuse to play?
I will refuse any role that doesn't move me or move my
career in the direction I am steering it in.
Jay: How have you managed to keep working over the
years?
Keep moving and you will keep working. I took a class
with Bill Duke years ago. He was phenomenal, but
two-thirds of the class was him instilling in us the
importance of knowing this business and doing it all.
He said "if you aren't acting you should be producing
and if you aren't producing you should be writing and if you
don't have a script find one. There are many people
out there with scripts that are sitting on a shelf
collecting dust." I say learn this business and
you will always work in some capacity and when you are
creating people want to create with you. Creativity is
magnetic.
Jay: What's on the horizon?
My episode of Third Watch, "too little, too late",
just aired three weeks ago. Sorry you missed it, and
this weekend I am shooting a GMC commercial and
another one next week. This summer I will be producing
and starring in a short film. I'll keep you posted and
you can always go to my website http://www.natashamdixon.com/
to check for updates on what's new with me.
Jay: Any words of advice?
Act as if and you will become as if. What has
turned my career around was me truly figuring out exactly
what I want and walking in it. For example most people
say "oh when I have an A-list agent then I will be an a
list actor and I will be able to do A-list projects"
That is the have, be, do way of thinking. You will
always chase things and let things define you.
I believe in the Be, Do, Have way of living.
" Be an A-list actor, So I will do A-list work, then I
will have all the things A-list Actors have"
Fight for what you want.
