Marci T.House

There is an old adage that it takes a community to raise a child, well in the case of Marci T. House it took a community theatre to get the job done. It was at the ripe old age of seven that this talented Chicago native heard the calls of the stage, those calls led her to the Chicago Park District Theatre. “I really don't remember a time when I did not want to act. As a child I grew up in front of the television, and I would say to myself, ‘I want to do that’. So, I've been trying to do ‘that’ ever since”, she says.

Since those early days she has gone on to study at Louisiana Tech University and University of Illinois at Chicago. The lessons that she learned eventually prompted a move to Hollywood.  Since relocating to Los Angeles Marci has had the honor of studying with Diane Hardin, of The Young Actors Space, and with Bill Duke’s critically acclaimed Actor’s Boot Camp.

The love of theatre makes Ms. House more than an actress but also a lifelong student of the craft. “I love to see good stage performances because they seem to charge me up. The energy coming off of the stage can light an entire room, and that's what I strive for every time I'm fortunate enough to land a new role”, she states.

While landing acting jobs is not an easy feat she has managed to shine in several film and television roles. Some notable appearances are alongside Blair Underwood in the soon to be released Final Breakdown, with veteran actor Sy Richardson in The Court, and also with the late Lynn Thigpenn in the CBS drama series The District. Other appearances are One Special Moment, Arrest & Trial, Party of Five, Early Edition and The Parenthood. “I'm very proud of these accomplishments but I feel that those experiences are only the tip if the ice burg for what is to come”.

Not one to be pigeon holed Marci wants to do away with stereotypes when it comes to casting. “I don't want to be placed inside of the traditional Hollywood box of a character actress, or leading lady, or supporting type. I think that limits you, and after you hear it so often it makes you limit yourself. I want to play roles that make me stretch as an actor, from serious drama to comedy, I want to do it all.”, she admits.

She feels that African Americans are not represented in the ranks of the female action heroes and wants that to change. She discloses that she is in love with the tough kick-ass characters played by Angelina Jolie and Michelle Rodriguez and would love to someday be that figure for African American actresses. “I would love to be that ‘tough-girl’ character because they're high-energy and just a lot of fun to play, however I don't feel like we have that type for Black actresses yet”, she confesses.

While citing Meryl Streep, Shanesia Davis-Williams, and Tracey Ellis-Ross as some of her influences she is truly just a fan of good acting. “I think that any actor who does good work influences me”, she says. She believes that a lot of actors try to "act" like their characters, but that's not her approach. She feels that a part of every character that you play really does live within you and that the hard part is trying to tap into that part of yourself. “Most people don't want to go to those places and spend most of their lives trying not to, but as an actor you have to. I'd like to think that 100% of me goes into every character, but I'm sure that's not true”.

Aside from on screen performances Marci has been making a name for herself in the world of animation voiceovers. She lends her voice to The Sho’Nuffs, There Goes The Nation, The Contract, Sista’s In The City, Pookie Poo, Baby’s Mama Drama, Those Who Walk In Darkness and Being; all of which are very successful animated series for Urban Entertainment.

Marci currently has a wonderful short film by Hanelle Culpepper on the festival circuit called, A Single Rose. It's a period piece that takes place in the rural south in the 30's and has already won several awards. She is also producing a short film written by Kenny Young. It's a story of how an aspiring actor decides to do whatever it takes to make it in the Hollywood game. She created the story and is starring in the project as well.
